What is the ruling of a person who committed a major grave sin and died without repenting?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.
On the authority of Abu Tharr the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, told us that anyone of his Ummah who dies without ascribing any partners to Allaah The Almighty will enter Paradise even if he committed adultery or theft. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Accordingly, anyone of this Ummah who dies as a believer will enter Paradise, either after entering Hell and coming out of it, or without entering Hell at all. This ruling applies to the person who does not repent from his sin or is not purified by receiving the Sharee‘ah punishment that is prescribed for it. As regards, the one who repents from his sins while fulfilling the conditions of repentance, he will not be cast into Hell, Allaah willing. Likewise, the one who commits a sin which deserves corporal punishment under Sharee‘ah and who actually received this punishment, he will not enter Hell.
On the authority of ‘Ubaadah ibn As-Saamit the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that anyone who commits a sin which deserves a corporal punishment and receives that punishment in the worldly life, it will be an expiation for such a sin. Anyone who commits a sin and Allaah The Almighty does not expose him, his affair is up to Allaah The Almighty; He either punishes or forgives him. Al-Qaadhi ‘Iyaadh from the Maaliki School of jurisprudence, mentioned that the majority of scholars take this Hadeeth as evidence that the corporal punishment prescribed for sins expiates when applied to the sinner.
