Performing Friday Prayer in School

Question

As a student in Germany currently doing my Abitur (German high school diploma), is it permissible in Islam to perform the Jumu’ah prayer at school with other Muslim students, given that the official Jumu’ah time always coincides with our school hours? We cannot leave school to attend the mosque, so we are considering organizing the prayer together in a classroom. Would this fulfill the requirements, or must it be in a mosque?Jazakallahu kheyranMay Allah bless you Sheikh

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The mosque is not a pre-requisite for holding the Friday prayer according to the majority of scholars, contrary to the view of the Maliki Madhhab (school of jurisprudence). Therefore, if you are a group of people that meets the minimum number required for the Friday prayer to be valid, which is four according to the Hanafi Madhhab, twelve according to the Maliki Madhhab, or forty resident men according to the Shafi‘i and Hanbali Madhhabs, then you may perform the Friday prayer in this school without any problem, and you are not required to go to the mosque.

However, if your group does not reach the number required for the Friday prayer to be valid, and the Friday prayer is being held in a mosque in your town, then you must go there to perform it, unless you have a legitimate excuse that allows you to miss the Friday prayer.

Allah knows best.
