Is it permissible to wear gold ornaments such as rings, bracelets and necklaces while making Wudhoo’ (ablution) or prayer?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
It is permissible to wear a ring while one is making Wudhoo’. Some scholars are of the opinion that it should be moved while making Wudhoo’ so that water could flow over the skin underneath it. In Al-Musannaf, Ibn Abi Shaybah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, stated: "It was narrated that ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar used to move his ring while making Wudhoo’. Abu Tameem and Ibn Hubayrah also used to do so."
As for bracelets, necklaces as well as other accessories that women wear on the body parts of Wudhoo’, if they are not tight fitting, then they should be moved, otherwise, they should be taken off. Al-Kharashi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, a Maaliki scholar, said: "Every separating medium on the hand or any other part that should be washed in Wudhoo’, such as the bones worn by archers on their fingers, should be taken off – if it is tight fitting – or moved – if it is loose enough for water to flow underneath."
prayer is valid in case of wearing these ornaments, as long as they are pure.
Allaah Knows best.
