Fatwa CenterHusband Questions Wife about Past Sins although She Repented
Question
My question is in regards to marriage and the rights of a husband to know everything about his wife before they were married. I believe if it is something that is undeniable and she has asked for forgiveness from Allah, then she should tell if it will affect the marriage. But my husband now feels the need to always ask me about everything that has happened in my past. I tell him that I have repented and that I have changed, (Al-Hamdu Lillah) and that you have accepted me as I am, so why do we continuously have to go back in time and talk about things that I wish no longer to remember. He constantly tells me how he wishes never to find out something that I have told him, but I am trying to live a new life, one full of Imaan and Ibaadha, and he continues to bring me back to times I wish no longer to be a part of. Please tell me if he has the right to know every detail of my life before marriage. I was told by another website that he doesn't and if I have asked Allah for repentance, and he (my husband) is my first witness to see how I have changed then he has no need or right to know my past if it does not affect him now with me?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad 
is His slave and Messenger.
We ask Allah to bestow steadfastness, patience and goodness upon you. Know, dear sister, that your husband has no right to know about your past sins. You are even ordered not to tell him anything about any sins you committed. The Prophet said: “Avoid these filthy things (sins) which Allaah has forbidden. If someone happens to commit any of them, then he should conceal himself with the screen of Allah and repent to Allah, because if anyone uncovers his hidden sins to us, we shall inflict on him the punishment prescribed by Allah, The Al-Mighty.” [Al Bayhaqi and Al-Haakim who classified it as authentic, and Ath-Thahabi agreed with him]
It is sufficient for the slave to repent from his/her previous sins asking Allah forgiveness.
