Fatwa CenterThe wife's parents want to live with her and her husband
Question
a FRIEND OF MINE IS MARRIED AND HER PARENTS WANT TO LIVE WITH HER AND HER HUSBAND. SHE AND HER HUSBAND HAD LIVED WITH HER PARENTS FOR ALMOST 2 YEARS AFTER THEY MARRIED BUT THERE WERE ALOT OF PROBLEMS FROM HER PARENTS SIDE AND SHE ALWAYS GOT ILL DUE TO THIS AND HER HUSBAND USE TO GO INTO THIS SHELL BECUASE HE DID NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE AND FREE TO DO WHAT HE LIKED. SHE AND HER HUSBAND DID NOT HAVE ANY PERSONAL PROBLEMS. NOW THAT HER PARENTS ASKED TO LIVE WITH THEM, SHE IS VERY WORRIED THAT THESE PROBLEMS MUST NOT ARISE AGAIN AND GET ILL AND HAVE A LIFE OF TENSION AND HAVE HER HUSBAND LIVING LIKE A HERMIT. SHE WOULD LIKE TO LIVE INDEPENDENT AND HAVE A HAPPY LIFE WITH HER HUSBAND AND CHILD. HOW MUST SHE TELL THEM THAT AND WHAT MUST SHE DO.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
The husband and wife have the right to lead a marital life and be able to live without being harmed or disturbed. Therefore, the spouses are not obliged to accept the wife's parents to live with them in the same marital house, especially when the situation is difficult. If these parents ask the spouses to dwell with them, then one should be wise in dealing with them about the situation. Firstly, one should seek Allaah's Help in doing so, and then the help of their relatives in order to avoid any bad consequences and problems.
