Question
I'm 26 years old and i'm still single living in America with all it's temptations. I don't have the money nor the college degree that would allow me to get married to a girl back home. Is it okay to get married to an American girl in secret with witnesses and all. I don't want to commit zina but depression got a hold of me. The problem is how can i actually meet someone without actually going out to parties and night clubs which are all forbidened. Or is it okay to go to night clubs as long as i have a good intention in mind. Sincerely, Muslim brother
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
There are some conditions which should be met for a marriage contract to be valid, the most important of which are the consent of the guardian and the presence of two witnesses. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 83629.
As regards making the marriage contract public, this is desirable and one should do so whenever possible. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 81385.
As regards the method of looking for a pious and righteous wife, please refer to Fatwa 86667.
However, it is not permissible for you to go to places of disobedience and sin even with the intention of looking for a girl in order to approach her for marriage; having a good intention does not render a evil deed good or permissible; for more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 84281.
Therefore, we advise you to endeavor in looking for a pious wife, and you should not despair, as you may find a pious woman whose parents and herself would be pleased with very little marriage expenses.
If you are planning to marry a woman of the people of the book, then you should refer to Fataawa 89418 and 84724.
Finally, it should be noted that there are many harms and disadvantages in residing in a non-Muslim country, therefore, if you are not in a dire necessity for residing there, you should take the initiative to migrate to a Muslim country. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 86405.
