Question
Is the opinion of some scholars that fighting against all the non muslims is obligatory even if they are peaceful a valid opinion? They also say that islam was spread by the sword and all verses of peace in Quran are abrogated! Whats the truth? Pls explain
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Islam is peaceful to those who are peaceful to it as Allaah Says (what means): {And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allaah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.}[Quran 8:61]
Islam does not fight except those who fight against it and transgress it, or put people to trial in their religion and prevent them from choosing the religion of Allaah with their own free will.
As regards to the claim that Islam spread by the sword, then this is a false claim refuted by the texts of Sharee’ah and by history and reality.
Indeed, Islam was established by revelation (Quran and Sunnah), and the sword is but a necessary means to deter those who prevent this religion from being conveyed to people and to secure freedom for all the people on earth to choose freely what they think to be the religion of Allaah, The Almighty.
It is in the light of the above that one should understand the verses of fighting and the verses of peace and reconcile between them.
