My house is next to a mosque. Is it permissible for me to pray the Friday prayer behind the Imaam of the mosque while I am inside my house behind the door which is right next to the mosque? Thank you and As-Salaamu ‘Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Amongst the conditions of the validity of the Friday prayer is that it must be prayed in the mosque, unless the mosque is narrow and each row is fully connected. In this case, it can be performed outside it in the streets. Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said in Al-Fataawa: “If the mosque’s capacity was reached with regards to rows, then they can make rows outside the mosque and, if their rows were fully connected in the streets and markets, their prayer will be valid.” A barrier (between them) may prevent the connection of the rows. Shaykh Al-Islaam also said: “If there is a wall between the rows in a way that prevents them from seeing the rows although they hear the Takbeerat without any trouble, then their prayer will not be valid according to the soundest opinion of scholars.”
Accordingly, it is not permissible for the questioner to perform the Friday prayer in her house even if it is very near to the mosque.
