Fulfill your vow as long as you can

Question

I have consulted your web site for many issues. I need to know what the rule is when one says that when Allah accepts my Du'a for any purpose I will perform such and such act. I basically committed myself to Allah that I will say two Nafl after Maghrib as Shukar Nafl. Throughout my life but I found that it is not right to say like that I did perform Nafl for many months. But now am confused and have stopped doing it. What should I do, should I carry on saying the Nafl or should I give Zakah for such a commitment! I hope to hear from you.

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: Whoever makes a vows to do something in obedience to Allah should obey Him; and whoever makes a vow to disobey Allah should not disobey Him . [Reported by Imam al-Bukhari and others] Everyone who makes a vow to obey Allah should fulfill his vow. Therefore, the enquiring brother should continue performing the prayer he had vowed to perform. He should remember that Allah highly praised those who fulfill their vows. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {They (are those who) fulfill (their) vows, and they fear a Day whose evil will be wide-spreading.}[76:7]. The expiation is not given unless one is unable to fulfill his vow. Allah knows best.
